Is It Ok to Be Fat?

Everyone who knows me knows I am pretty passionate about the show Biggest Loser…I watch the show religiously, and my Tuesday night routine starts with a run and ends with me sitting on the couch in tears watching the stories of people doing things that they haven’t been able to do for years (from running for 5 minutes straight to running a marathon).  This show, along with the nation’s growing interest in the topic of obesity is why I thought I would post my thoughts on the ABC Nightline Discussion “Is It Ok to Be Fat?”

Within the last year, I personally have made lifestyle changes to my diet and exercise routine in an effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For me, its been about living long and honestly being healthy for my family. I don’t have kids but I’ve always wanted to be an active mom and when I got married, it became increasingly important for me to figure out how to make the word “healthy” apply to me.  I’ve tried to really evaluate what society has determined to be “normal” and the gap between that, reality, and what is healthy.

According to Crystal Renn, I have ‘fataphobia’…a little crazy don’t ya think? I watched the ABC Nightline Discussion “Is It Ok to Be Fat?” and was SHOCKED at the types of things that Crystal Renn and Marianne Kirby threw out there to make excuses for America. These women tried to say that people are born obese and if you eat healthy and exercise you have an eating disorder. Marianne tried to sell the idea that you can be healthy and obese, but she admitted that she has given up on trying to lose weight. I learned that 1/3 of America is obese…crazy right?! And the growing concern in our country is the way obesity is affecting children. As Meme Roth explained “we have a good day, we eat cake, bad day-cake, break up-cake, birthday-cake…” I will admit that I am constantly thinking about what I put into my body. When I have a cookie for desert I don’t feel guilty, its when I eat 10 cookies and a bag of M&Ms that I think “so this is how obesity happens.” New Years resolutions, yo-yo dieting, and scary statistics about the growing rate of obesity and we have people like Marianne Kirby who from what I read has absolutely no education in Nutrition or Health, making excuses for America. I do understand that healthy comes in all shapes and sizes, but to say that Obesity is ok, and you can be obese and not have any health risks is as MeMe Roth said “like saying your lung is black but you don’t have cancer yet.”

The conclusion: I don’t know if there was one, but the majority of the people who were angry with MeMe were overweight. There is a difference between anorexia and obesity–you don’t have to be one or the other. This isn’t a debate about model thin vs. gluttony, or about the campaign for real beauty…this is about obesity and what is means to be HEALTHY. MeMe can take things a little too far; currently the NAAO is boycotting girl scout cookies…poor kids, but I do understand her motive and I admire what she is trying to achieve.

I thought today I would post  some lists that I’ve been keeping in my spybook. I’m realizing more and more as I go through life that keeping a record of my goals, my happy moments, my unhappy moments, my revelations etc…keeps me feeling like I am going somewhere. It gives me a sense of movement and progression. Bryant and I are always talking about things we want to do, whether its something that day, that year, or in our lifetime, we are always making plans.
